XTF - Extended Tape Facility

XTF is a totally new solution for VSE users to take advantage of the high capacities of magnetic tape cartridges.

Fewer cartridges and fewer cartridge units are needed, because many tape files can be written to one unit at the same time without storing the data to intermediate disk storage.

• XTF simulates up to 64 virtual cartridge units
  
  
• XTF simulates an unlimited number of virtual cartridges on one or more real cartridges
  
  
• XTF combines the output of multiple virtual cartridge units to a single real unit
  
  
• XTF may hold output data sets which are later used for input in data spaces
  
  
• XTF can read virtual cartridges in advance into a data space. Afterwards, this data space can be used for input by any number ofprograms - also simultaneously.
  
  
• XTF has an own buffer management with an optimum blocking to avoid I/Os.
  
  
• XTF has a central catalog, that indicates which virtual cartridge is stored in which real file (container file).
  
  
• XTF supports catalog access by multiple VSE machines simultaneously.
  
  
• XTF supports BVS (and in the future, other tape management systems as well)
